What is Willpower versus Wantpower? Willpower involves putting off what you want in the short-term to get what you want in the long-term. It requires conscious effort and often a significant investment of emotional and cognitive resources. It involves resisting urges, fighting temptations, and employing different strategies to maintain control. It is a lot of hard work.
There have been many studies done on behaviour which suggest that willpower along is not enough to make a lasting change. According to U.S. News & World Report, the failure rate of New Year’s resolutions is said to be about 80 percent. Most lose their resolve by mid-February.
In hypnosis we can call willpower Wantpower. Want power can be described as wanting having a strong desire to attain a goal rather than needing to. We can enlist the help of your subconscious mind where your various programmes of behaviour and thinking are deeply lodged. Think of the subconscious or unconscious mind as that player on the team who wasn’t on your side. Now by talking to the the subconscious mind once in trance via suggestions and repetition, we can get it on the same team. In perfect agreement.
