Hypnosis FAQ’s

When smokers try to stop with other methods, they can become angry, resentful, experience feeling of being deprived.  This is caused by the feeling that they have “lost” something from their life.  There is a gap or a void.  Something is “missing”.  The beauty of hypnosis, and the way we use hypnosis in particular, is that it removes this feeling of deprivation. It removes the need and/or the desire to smoke. You won’t need useless aids, gimmicks, or substitutes. No nicotine gum or patches. No inhalers or nasal sprays. No needles or lasers. All that you have to do with hypnosis is sit back in a nice comfortable chair and relax. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Since the American Medical Association (AMA) and the British Medical Association (BMA) approved the use of clinical hypnosis in the 1950s, thousands of people have found hypnosis to be an effective way to stop smoking, lose weight and improve their lives in many ways. There are varying degrees of success with hypnosis because much depends upon the skill, expertise, experience and competence of the individual hypnotherapist.

The beauty of our unique approach is that we use the best of traditional hypnotherapy techniques and combine them with the new science of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which takes our process to an even greater level of effectiveness.

One of the reasons why it’s not painful or difficult to stop smoking with our method – in fact, one of the reasons why it’s so easy – is that we transfer the pleasure derived from smoking to a healthier habit of your choice e.g. exercise, drinking more water or good old fashioned relaxation. This is the reason why, with us, there is NO unwanted weight gain or other problems associated with kicking the habit – the only side-effects are improvements in health, wealth and freedom.

Hypnosis is possibly as old as mankind. The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven, scientifically sound applications. Today, the use of hypnosis is seen in a variety of fields including: medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, and education.

Most people have a limited understanding of the positive results that can be achieved in professional sports and education. Most people have a limited understanding of the positive results that can be achieved in a professionally controlled hypnosis session. We would like to dispel some of the myths and answer the most frequently asked questions about hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a natural and normal state of the mind in which the body experiences a state of deep physical relaxation while the mind remains clear, alert and focused. In this altered state of awareness, the subconscious mind becomes open and suggestible. A person naturally enters this state many times during a normal day – just most of us are not aware that it is happening. How many times have you been thinking about something while driving your car and suddenly realized that your exit was 3 kilometres back? Most of us go to the movies and get so caught up in the drama of the story we forget that we are only watching a movie.  Most of us daydream from time to time. All of these are examples of a natural state of hypnosis called “environmental hypnosis.”

Our minds work on two levels – the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think, and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious mind controls our habits. In the relaxed state known as hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind. This is why it is so quick and easy to change habits of a lifetime with hypnosis.

Generally speaking, every normal person is “hypnotizable”. That is, people with an IQ of at least 70, and no severe mental disorders. Therefore, virtually anyone can achieve successful results using hypnosis. We custom each session to your individual needs, so it works for virtually everyone, every time!!

Hypnosis and NLP are completely safe. You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time. Hypnosis is not sleep, nor can you get “stuck” in a state of hypnosis. You cannot be made to do something against your will. Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable experience.

Yes. Any person of at least average intelligence and ability to focus and concentrate can go into hypnosis. The better a person is able to concentrate and focus and the more intelligent a person is, the easier it is for him to go into the hypnotic trance. Above all, the person must be willing. No one can hypnotise you if you don’t want to be hypnotised. Your natural defenses in your mind will prevent this from happening.

No, you are definitely not asleep, though to an observer, your body appears to be sleeping because you are in a state of deep physical relaxation. You are completely awake and aware of your surroundings. You hear everything. Since all your senses are magnified 8 times, you are actually more alert and aware while you are in hypnosis than you are in your normal waking state.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and the power comes from within the mind of the person being hypnotised. The hypnotist is merely the guide who directs and leads the person into the hypnotic state. The hypnotist induces the hypnotic trance by using certain words and phrases the subconscious mind understands, as well as using various techniques like deep breathing, imagery and tone of voice.

No, hypnosis is not dangerous. It is just a natural state of the mind utilised by the hypnotist for purposes of entertainment (as they do on stage – remember you have to be willing) or to help the individual change certain habits or pattern of behaviour. The mind has natural defenses built in which will automatically reject any suggestions it deems harmful.

No, hypnosis is not mind control. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist cannot make you do or say anything you ordinarily would not do, unless you wanted to. You always remain in control and are awake and alert the whole time.

No, you will not lose control while you are in hypnosis. You are fully conscious and very aware of what is being suggested. You are always in control. The mind will reject any undesired suggestions automatically.

Quite the opposite! A gullible, unintelligent or weak-minded person is incapable of maintaining the necessary focus and concentration necessary to go into the hypnotic state.

No, hypnosis is used often to boost a person’s concentration and will power.

Most people remember everything that went on while they were in hypnosis, but sometimes, if they went into a particularly deep state, they may forget what happened. Sometimes the hypnotist will suggest that they will forget what happened, and they do. Other times people have the misconception that they are supposed to forget everything, so they do – because they gave themselves the suggestion to forget!

Because smoking is a habit, it is controlled by the unconscious mind. Since hypnosis and NLP work directly with the unconscious, this is the only method that has been proven to succeed.  We can help you effortlessly transition into the healthy lifestyle of a happy non-smoker – it only takes sixty minutes to quit.

Yes, definitely! Hypnosis can be used to make positive changes in your life such as to stop smoking, lose weight, improve self esteem and confidence, improve sales ability and memory retention. Practically any bad or destructive habits or behaviours can be removed via hypnosis. It can help ease fears and phobias, improve relationships and communication – the list goes on and on.

I have always been fascinated by the power of the mind to change a thought, a belief or habit and am always blown away by how effective hypnosis can be for my clients.

To hear back from a client who has been a smoker for 30 years that they haven’t touched a cigarette or felt like one in over 6 months is inspiring. We still don’t really understand how hypnosis works on our subconscious, but what we do know is that we can interrupt the neural pathways with hypnosis via suggestion. We do know that someone can get over a phobia if they want to and if they are willing to accept hypnotic suggestions. It appears that when we are deeply relaxed and compliant we are more likely to accept the suggestions being given to us – you can imagine the brain is like a clean sponge ready to absorb new information and thoughts and new habits.

My background before I became a hypnotherapist years ago was in fitness. For 26 years I conducted fitness classes from kindergartens to aged care homes. I found though that most people would not continue a gym program for very long. They would lose their motivation and sight of their goals as only very motivated people are able to be totally accountable to themselves.
So as a fitness instructor it was my job to motivate my clients and if I didn’t motivate them they would not come back. So, no revenue.

As is the case with hypnosis it was all about improving people’s mindset and utilising their motivation, determination and desire to achieve a goal. And this is what we do in the hypnosis session via suggestion.
I became a Life Coach in 2009 where I learned so many wonderful ways to combat negativity and manage your emotions. I qualified as a Trainer and Assessor Certificate IV and put my new-found skills to good use teaching long term unemployed people how to improve their self-esteem and prepare them for work again. Many of these people had major mental health issues – depression, anxiety, substance abuse, were poor and in struggle town. I taught 7 groups of 16 people each and had many good results with some in jobs and most being able to function more effectively socially.

I wanted a quicker way to help people. I had looked at hypnosis previously having flirted with the idea of becoming a Hypnotherapist for many years. I thought it would be a logical segue for me and only enhance my skills as well as being an opportunity to run my own business earn some good money and not rely on someone for a job which as we know you cannot today. I loved the idea of using the imagination and the senses to effect change. I had always been very imaginative and a lot of hypnosis is weaving the client’s goals and desired changes into a story and I had always been a very good story teller. Of course, it is a lot more than just telling a story – the suggestions must be ones the client can relate to and is involved in developing.

And so, I am in my 5th year here in Geelong and have seen over 1000 clients to date. I love hypnosis because it really is a large the undiscovered fruitful frontier of the human mind. I am just the facilitator and my clients are the ones who are their own magicians. I remain constantly in awe of the capacity of the sub conscious mind to receive and accept a suggestion which cause great joy and the change they so badly want to affect.
